When it came to the end of David’s sovereignty, his eldest son, Adonijah, wanted to be king of Israel. The Bible describes him as having the charisma of a king. So even the high priest Abiathar and the commander Joab were willing to join his cabinet. Yet, David had already appointed Solomon to succeed him as king. It shattered Adonijah’s dream. But it did not make Adonijah submit. Though the chance was not great, he still prepared his armed forces. He even held a kingship-standard sacrificial ceremony, inviting the royal family and officials to participate, striving to become the real leader of Israel. His ambition almost came true, but it ultimately killed him. There may be only a thin line between ambition and ignorance. The Bible records that Adonijah was so self-inflated that even did not even put the Lord in his eyes. “You know that the kingdom belonged to me, and all Israel looked to me as king, but the kingdom turned to my brother because he received it from the LORD. – 1 Kings 2:15”. He didn’t know how to manage his desires. When things backfired, he neither respected the system nor obeyed the Lord, and finally died at a young age. It is good for people to have dreams, but God has his destiny for each of us. We must understand our limitations. “Don’t be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. – Galatians 6:7.”
