Many years ago, I saw a tragedy in the newspaper. Several young people ignored the warnings on the coast and went fishing there. As far as we know, the water area is the harbor outlet, and the current is fast. One of the young men accidentally fell into the freezing water. Yet, the young man was quickly carried away from the shore due to the strong current. Others present were unable to save him. They could only watch in horror as he struggled to resist the current and rowed towards the shore. Though the young man could swim, after struggling for several minutes, he died of hypothermia. The limp body was immediately sucked into the whirlpool, and after a few seconds, it surfaced on a calmer shore about ten meters away. The young man struggled in vain at the last moment of his life, but the water flow completed it for him within seconds after his death. Ironically, it was his struggle that led to the young man’s death. If he dove with the current, the current might bring him back to the shore. It turns out that sometimes, when we are in adversity, we may find a way out by going with the flow instead of struggling. It is perhaps the wisdom of Psalm 46:10 when we are at the center of turbulence, “Be still! and know that I am God.”
