“Competition” itself is neutral, but when it tempts us to put focus on our interests and compare ourselves with others, it can become a foothold for arrogance and jealousy and is taking us in the wrong direction. An interesting story in the New Testament outlines the biblical value of competition. The disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. Then he said, “I tell you the truth unless you turn to form your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.” We are all equal in the view of the Lord. When our heart is filled with humility, we are just like a kid who treats competition as a way to learn new things from others.
