‘Ranking’ in students’ academic performance is much concern in Chinese education. No matter how well a kid performs in an academic assessment, many Chinese parents shift their concern immediately to the rank of their kid in the class. ‘Ranking’ is indeed a thorn in Chinese education. But what is the educational value of ranking? As a father of two kids, I cannot prohibit them from comparing to each other, but I won’t compare my kids’ abilities, for I know they have different strengths. Likewise, as a teacher, I have no way to stop my students from comparing to each other, but I won’t compare my students’ abilities. Peter asked Jesus, “What about John?” Jesus said to him, “If I want him to wait until I come, what is it to you, follow me.” – John 21:22. The Bible teaches us that as long as we do our work seriously, it will satisfy us without comparing ourselves to others. “Each one should test their actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else – Galatians 6:4” Examine our faith and actions. Are we living by Jesus’ words? If so, we do not need to compare ourselves to others.
